A group opposed to pot legalization is unveiling propositions on Thursday for the U.S. government to reduce limitations on clinical research into cannabis’s potential as medication, in an initial step for an organization of its kind.

The plan from Smart Approaches to Cannabis, which is co-founded by former U.S. Congressman Patrick Kennedy, follows three U.S. Senators this year introduced a bill that would need the federal government to recognize pot’s medical value and enable states to set their own medical marijuana policies.
